Default A graphics wtf?

When i entnered the command dxdiag in run, the graphics tab said that there was 1000mb memory on a nvidia geforce 8400m gt


the details on the laptop model said that it was a 512mb card


then when i went on a site it said i have a 256mb card

8400 only comes with 256MB I think. The 8600 comes in two versions 256MB and 512MB.

maybe its possible your laptop was sharing its system memory with the gfx card?

no.....i havent. All i know is that it said...max memory 512mb.

Virtual memory is not used by graphics cards since it writes to the hard drive and that is far too slow for a graphics card to use FWIW

This is probably the answer. Check by going into your BIOS where you can normally set how much of the system memory is shared with the graphics card.

You get into the BIOS when you restart your computer, some of the first words that come up on the screen tell you to press ESC or DEL or F1 or w/e to get into the BIOS. Make sure you know what you're doing because you might switch off your hard drive or other hardware and then panic.
